Wetlands are categorized as a) 'habitat high quality', meaning unmitigatable or irreplaceable in terms of the plant and/or animal community types in residence; and/or b) 'of high functional value', meaning that a particular wetland is evaluated in terms of its natural functions to provide stormwater storage or water quality mitigation -- information useful for watershed planning and mitigation decisions. Specific functional assessments include shoreline/streambank stabilization, sediment/toxicant retention, nutrient removal/transformation, stormwater storage, and wildlife habitat/floristic diversity. The ADID data set was created through the joint efforts of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (the funding agency), the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), the McHenry County Conservation District, the McHenry County Department of Planning and Development, and the Northeastern Illinois Planning Commission (NIPC). Purpose: The purpose of this ADID study is to provide information on the wetland resources in McHenry County. It is intended for use as a planning tool for local governments, to facilitate the making of development and resource conservation decisions, and also for use by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to assist in the process of issuing wetland permits. Supplemental_Information: The data for this study were collected primarily from 1995 to 1997. The base wetland inventory is a combination of the NRCS digital wetland inventory completed in 1996, and select wetlands from the National Wetlands Inventory (NWI) developed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in the early 1980s, both at a 1:24,000 scale. The NRCS wetland inventory was produced following the "Illinois Wetland Mapping Conventions, June 1994" including an off-site procedure using at least 5 years of recent aerial compliance low-altitude color slides and National Aerial Photography Program (NAPP) 1988 aerial photos. Additional resources were used including county soil survey maps, FEMA floodplain maps, and USGS watershed boundaries. Wetland boundaries were drafted on USGS 7.5 minute quadrangles and digitized by NRCS. Select NWI wetlands were merged with the inventory following aerial review and some on-site field verification for select wetlands by ADID technical advisory committee members in 1995 and 1996. Additions and corrections to the base inventory were digitized by NIPC staff using Environmental Systems Research Institute's (ESRI's) ARC/INFO version 7.x software. Please note that this is not a file of regulatory wetland boundaries. Lake evaluations were based on fish shocking and field visitation, primarily in 1996. A plant species list is included for all high quality wetlands which were visited. The positional accuracy of wetland boundaries varies from one location to another. A limited number of copies of the file will be distributed on CD-ROMs with a customized GIS interface. The file will be in two formats: ESRI's ArcView shapefile format (projected in Lambert Conformal Conic NAD27) and ESRI's ARC/INFO coverage format (in Illinois State Plane Coordinate System, East Zone, NAD27 survey feet). The interface was built by NIPC's consultant, GeoAnalytics, Inc. using MapObjects programming tools from ESRI. Paper maps will be available to review at the offices of: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Chicago Branch; U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Region 5; US Fish and Wildlife Service; USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service; McHenry County Soil and Water Conservation District; McHenry County Planning and Development Department; and McHenry County Conservation District. The digital GIS file and CD-ROMs will be distributed by NIPC. Please contact NIPC's Natural Resources Department for ordering information. NIPC's Internet web page is http://www.nipc.cog.il.us.
